Lakers Win Three Events At ONU Invite

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Roosevelt made its final preparations for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships count Saturday by winning three events at the ONU Outdoor Invitational hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.

Millicent Ghapson won the women's high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters, easily clearing the bar in the first four attempts she took in the meet. Cristian Martinez lowered his season-best time in the 5,000-meter racewalk to win the event in a time of 24 minutes and 38.14 seconds. Geremy Gomez rounded out the trio of victors with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:57.69.

The Lakers' 4x100-meter men's relay team finished second in a time of 44.07 seconds for the only other top-five finish on the men's side. Kieran Cassidy finished eighth in the javelin with a toss of 32.41 meters on a rainy day Friday.

The women's team had a plethora of top-10 finishes in their own right with several top-five finishes in addition to Ghapson. On the track, Beatrice Bruno finished fifth in the 400 meters in a season-best time of 1:05.06. Meanwhile it was a banner day for the field events with Alexia Lohman taking fourth place in the triple jump with a program-best leap of 10.03 meters. In addition, Lisset Munoz finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 22.94 meters, edging out teammates Madalyn Smock and Abby Nelson, who finished sixth and seventh respectively with tosses of 20.93 and 19.65 meters.

Smock also finished ninth in the shot put at 9.14 meters and 10th in the discus with a throw of 32.57 meters. Angela Louis finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 4.77 meters, following up on her sixth-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 12.94 seconds. Destiny Ashcraft continued to show her prowess in the longer runs by finishing 10th in the 800 meters and ninth in the 1,500 meters.

The Lakers will now turn their focus to the CCAC Championships this Friday and Saturday in Joliet.
